WEEKEND WEATHER: Saturday Looks Good, Sunday Gets a Little Moody

Share

The Upper Peninsula heads into the weekend with a pretty decent Saturday on tap before showers and thunderstorms work their way through portions of the region Saturday night into Sunday.

Temperatures will generally reach the 70s and lower 80s, with the greatest chance for unsettled weather arriving overnight Saturday. By Sunday, western and central portions of the U.P. should begin improving while the eastern end has a better chance of hanging onto showers.

For anyone whose weekend plans involve a boat, fishing rod and unreasonable confidence, conditions around Pasty HQ look pretty respectable through much of Saturday.

Pasty HQ

Friday: ☀️ Mostly sunny with a high around 80°F. East to northeast winds around 5 mph.

Saturday: ⛅ Increasing clouds with a high around 75–78°F. East to southeast winds generally around 5–10 mph.

Saturday Night: 🌧️ Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms becoming possible overnight. Low around 62–64°F.

Sunday: 🌤️ A chance of showers early, followed by improving conditions. High around 78–80°F, with winds turning northwest.

Sunday Night: 🌙 Mostly clear and cooler with a low around 52–53°F.

Bays de Noc Marine Forecast

For fishermen, the wind and wave forecast is reasonably cooperative through much of the weekend, particularly Friday and Saturday.

Friday: 🌊 Winds generally 5–10 knots or less, with waves around 1 foot or less, although portions of the more exposed waters toward Green Bay could see waves approaching 2 feet.

Friday Night: 🌊 Northeast to east winds generally 5–15 knots. Waves should remain around 1–2 feet or less.

Saturday: 🌊 East to southeast winds generally around 10–15 knots, with waves primarily around 1–2 feet or less.

Saturday currently looks like the best full fishing day of the weekend. Conditions won’t necessarily resemble a sheet of glass, but nothing in the current forecast suggests a significant blow on either bay.

Saturday Night: ⛈️ Winds generally 5–10 knots, eventually shifting toward the southwest and west. Waves around 2 feet or less. Showers and thunderstorms become possible overnight.

Sunday: 🌊 Winds turn west and eventually northwest to north at approximately 5–15 knots. Waves should generally remain manageable, although the changing wind direction could make conditions choppier in exposed areas.

Fishing outlook: Friday evening through Saturday offers the best combination of manageable wind, waves and weather. Saturday night’s thunderstorm potential is the biggest concern. Sunday may remain fishable, but anglers should expect a wind shift and somewhat less predictable conditions.

Check the latest marine forecast before launching. Lake Michigan retains final authority over all weekend plans.

Western U.P.

Friday: ☀️ Sunny and warm with a high around 83°F. Light east winds around 5 mph.

Friday Night: 🌙 Partly cloudy with a low around 55°F. Winds becoming calm overnight.

Saturday: ⛅ Partly sunny and warm with a high around 81°F. Southeast winds around 5–10 mph, with a slight chance of an afternoon shower.

Saturday Night: ⛈️ Mostly cloudy with about a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Low around 59°F.

Sunday: 🌦️ A chance of showers, particularly during the morning and early afternoon, followed by gradual improvement. High around 76°F. Northwest winds around 5–10 mph may gust near 20 mph.

Sunday Night: 🌙 Mostly clear and cooler with a low around 51°F.

Saturday is the better bet for outdoor plans. Sunday doesn’t look like a washout, but it will be cooler and breezier behind the passing weather.

Central U.P.

Friday: ☀️ Sunny with a high around 72–73°F. Northeast winds around 5 mph.

Friday Night: 🌙 Partly cloudy with a low around 58°F.

Saturday: ⛅ Partly sunny and warmer with a high around 78°F. South winds around 5–10 mph becoming easterly during the afternoon.

Saturday Night: ⛈️ Mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight. Low around 65°F.

Sunday: 🌤️ Mostly sunny with a high around 74°F. Northwest winds of 5–15 mph could gust as high as 25 mph.

Sunday Night: 🌙 Mostly clear with a low around 60°F.

Saturday afternoon looks quite good. Saturday night becomes considerably more questionable, while Sunday brings sunshine back along with enough wind to relocate any unsecured lawn furniture.

Eastern U.P.

Friday: ☀️ Mostly sunny with a high around 79°F. North winds around 10 mph.

Friday Night: 🌫️ Partly cloudy with patchy fog possible overnight. Low around 50°F.

Saturday: ☀️ Any early fog should give way to mostly sunny skies. High around 81°F, with winds becoming southerly around 5–10 mph.

Saturday Night: ⛈️ Mostly cloudy with showers becoming possible overnight and thunderstorms possible later. Low around 62°F.

Sunday: 🌧️ Showers and thunderstorms are most likely during the morning, with rain chances gradually diminishing into the afternoon. High around 76°F. Winds turning northwest at 5–15 mph with possible gusts around 25 mph.

Sunday Night: 🌙 Partly cloudy with a low around 53°F.

The eastern U.P. has the greatest chance of Sunday morning being uncooperative. Saturday is clearly the better outdoor day, with conditions expected to gradually improve later Sunday.

Weekend Outlook

If you’re picking one day for fishing, camping, grilling, mowing the lawn or standing in the driveway discussing somebody else’s boat, Saturday is the winner across most of the Upper Peninsula.

Showers and thunderstorms become possible Saturday night, followed by cooler and breezier conditions Sunday. The western and central U.P. should improve more quickly Sunday, while rain may linger longer across the eastern end.

Around Pasty HQ, fishermen appear to have a decent window from Friday evening through much of Saturday.

Which means the weather has officially been removed from the list of acceptable excuses for coming home without fish.
