TRENARY \u2014 Residents of Trenary are once again insisting the National Weather Service “doesn’t understand what happened out here” after last weekend’s tornado was officially rated an EF-0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Locals argue the storm should have received at least an EF-5 designation based on emotional damage, social media engagement, and the fact that Earl Maki’s lawn chair has yet to be recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We had to pick up three branches,” said lifelong resident Gary LaFave, pointing dramatically at a birch limb roughly the size of a hockey stick. “I’ve lived here 68 years, and I’ve never seen the Dollar General shopping carts scattered quite like that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The National Weather Service stood by its assessment, noting that the tornado remained on the ground for approximately 90 seconds and caused minor damage to several trees, a shed, and two mailboxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report did, however, acknowledge that one trampoline was transported “an unusually impressive distance.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps the storm’s most remarkable feat, however, was what it didn’t touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite passing within sight of the famous Trenary Home Bakery, birthplace of the world-famous Trenary Toast, the bakery emerged completely unscathed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meteorologists say the bakery was simply outside the tornado’s path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’ve been saying it for years,” said local resident Carol Peterson. “That toast may be preservative-free, but it’s clearly protected by a higher power.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others pointed to what they described as the bakery’s “impenetrable aura of cinnamon, butter, and nostalgia.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The National Weather Service declined to comment on whether Trenary Toast possesses storm-deflecting properties, stating only that “bread products are not currently included in the Enhanced Fujita Scale.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, the Trenary Home Bakery reported no damage and confirmed that production of Trenary Toast continued uninterrupted, prompting one relieved resident to declare: “If the toast had gone, we’d have had to rebuild the whole town.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within hours of the announcement, Trenary residents launched the grassroots campaign #UpgradeOurTornado, claiming the storm had been “at least an EF-3 by Yooper standards.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Businesses quickly capitalized on the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Trenary Tavern unveiled the Twister Burger, described as “slightly disheveled but still edible,” while local gift shops began selling T-shirts reading: “I SURVIVED THE TRENARY TORNADO.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The shirts are reportedly selling well despite the fact that no injuries occurred and several customers admitted they were in Escanaba when the storm passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Facebook comment sections remain divided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One side insists the tornado was “the biggest thing to happen since the blizzard of ’96.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The other maintains it was “just a strong breeze.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At press time, a committee had formed to petition the State of Michigan to install a historical marker reading: “ON THIS SPOT, A LAWN ORNAMENT WAS MOVED APPROXIMATELY 14 FEET.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
