TRENARY \u2014 Executives at the Trenary Dollar General announced Tuesday that the store has posted record-breaking profits following what analysts are calling “the most profitable 72 hours in Upper Peninsula retail history.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The unexpected financial windfall comes after residents flocked to the store following two separate tornado scares and, just days later, widespread panic stemming from what experts are referring to as “Y2K: The Sequel.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Store employees say customers cleaned out virtually everything that wasn’t bolted down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We sold every flashlight, every case of bottled water, every package of toilet paper, every loaf of bread, and somehow… every can of Vienna sausages,” one employee said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another worker reported watching one customer purchase 27 bags of beef jerky, explaining, “You can’t be too careful.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The store also sold out of extension cords, AA batteries, duct tape, charcoal, ramen noodles, and nearly every Little Debbie snack cake in stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We even sold the decorative candles,” a cashier said. “Nobody knew why, but once one guy bought six of them, everybody else figured they needed candles too.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Corporate Takes Notice<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dollar General corporate officials reportedly contacted the Trenary location Monday morning after receiving an automated alert that simply read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Inventory approaching zero. Recommend immediate intervention.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regional managers initially believed the store had suffered a computer malfunction before learning the inventory had actually been purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We’ve never seen anything like it,” one executive reportedly said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“They’re buying Pop-Tarts like they’re legal tender.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Store Installing Tornado Siren<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Flush with cash, store management announced plans to install a state-of-the-art warning siren atop the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials say the siren will serve a dual purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During tornado season, it will activate whenever severe weather threatens the Trenary area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Outside of tornado season, however, the siren will be reserved exclusively for major in-store promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If frozen pizzas are two for five dollars, you’ll hear it,” the store manager explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If Mountain Dew goes on sale for under a buck, we’ll probably let it run for three solid minutes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The siren’s tone will reportedly differ depending on the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A steady wail will indicate a tornado warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A fast pulsing signal will mean buy one, get one free on laundry detergent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three short blasts followed by one long blast will alert residents that Little Debbie Swiss Rolls have been restocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents Approve<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many Trenary residents welcomed the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“It’s nice knowing whether I should head to the basement or the snack aisle,” one resident said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Honestly, either way I’m ending up at Dollar General.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others admitted they weren’t entirely sure whether recent crowds were weather-related or simply Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emergency Management Concerned<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials from Delta County Emergency Management expressed mild concern that residents might someday confuse an approaching tornado with a sale on paper towels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Store management dismissed those concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We’re confident folks around here know the difference,” the manager said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Besides, if both happen at once, they’re probably coming here anyway.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Economic Forecast<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Economists now estimate the Trenary Dollar General briefly became the largest economic engine in Alger County, narrowly surpassing the annual Trenary Outhouse Classic in consumer spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As of press time, employees were reportedly restocking shelves while keeping one hand on the weather radar and the other on the siren switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Management confirmed that if another tornado warning\u2014or another Y2K computer bug\u2014occurs this summer, they’re prepared to break sales records all over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
