HOUGHTON \u2014 Commissioner Joel Keranen has reportedly accomplished something generations of Copper Country politicians could only dream of: bringing Houghton County to the national headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For decades, the county has been known for Michigan Tech, copper mining history, Brockway Mountain, and surviving nine months of winter. Thanks to a single Fourth of July parade float, it briefly became known as “that county everyone on the internet was talking about.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The timing, observers noted, could hardly have been more patriotic. As America celebrated its 250th birthday with fireworks from coast to coast, Houghton County held its own Independence Day celebration by sending fireworks flying at a county commission meeting, proving once again that no one stages political theater quite like the Upper Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Political observers say it’s a remarkable achievement. Two years ago, Delta County made Upper Peninsula history by recalling three county commissioners in a landslide. More recently, Dickinson County entered the spotlight with its own recall effort. But while those stories largely remained regional, Houghton County skipped straight to the national stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents arrived at the county commission meeting expecting answers to what many considered a fairly straightforward question: how does a parade float of that size, complete with elaborate decorations and costumed participants, simply materialize in a Fourth of July parade without anyone noticing what it looked like beforehand?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, the meeting produced enough sparks to ensure Houghton County remained in the headlines for another news cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The controversy spread across the Upper Peninsula faster than word of fresh cudighi at a church picnic. Residents from Ironwood to Drummond Island suddenly became experts on Houghton County politics despite spending most of their lives believing the county’s biggest annual controversy involved Winter Carnival parking or whether the bridge should be open another ten minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By week’s end, Yoopers who couldn’t have named a Houghton County commissioner a month earlier were confidently debating constitutional law, parliamentary procedure, parade oversight, and the finer points of county government with the certainty usually reserved for discussions about deer camp and the proper way to eat a pasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Across the rest of the Upper Peninsula, county commissioners reportedly watched the situation unfold with increasing concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One board quietly replaced its scheduled discussion of park improvements with a forty-five-minute presentation on gravel specifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another spent an entire meeting discussing culverts in hopes of avoiding controversy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
