DICKINSON COUNTY \u2014 POLICE CAMERAS TOLD TO FLOCK OFF<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Law enforcement agencies in Dickinson County have discontinued their use of Flock automated license-plate-reader cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cameras automatically read license plates to help locate vehicles of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unfortunately, this represented a dangerous technological advancement in a region where vehicle identification has worked perfectly well for generations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYeah, that\u2019s Randy\u2019s truck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities can now return to the U.P.\u2019s traditional surveillance network: bartenders, retired guys sitting at McDonald\u2019s, and one woman on Facebook who somehow knows exactly whose truck was outside the Krist station at 11:47 Tuesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ISHPEMING \u2014 FIRE DEPARTMENT GETS A TRUCK BUILT DURING THE CURRENT CENTURY<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ishpeming City Fire Department received a new pumper truck, replacing equipment that included trucks 21 and 31 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 31-year-old truck will presumably spend retirement behind somebody\u2019s pole barn next to a 1997 Polaris Indy and three snowblowers that \u201cjust need the carbs cleaned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
GWINN \u2014 RESIDENTS VOLUNTARILY APPROACH POLICE<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gwinn held its National Night Out Saturday, giving residents an opportunity to meet police officers, firefighters and EMTs when nobody had crashed anything, lost anything or punched anybody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A crash involving motorcycles and a passenger vehicle on U.S. 41 resulted in two deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MARQUETTE COUNTY \u2014 COURT ATTEMPTS RADICAL NEW METHOD CALLED \u201cEVIDENCE\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Testimony continued in the Julie Boxley murder\/arson trial in Marquette County Circuit Court involving the March fire that killed Glenn Andrews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because this involves an actual death and an ongoing criminal case, we\u2019ll refrain from our customary Facebook forensic analysis, where someone studies one photograph for 14 seconds before announcing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.P. motorists have responded by reaffirming our regional traffic code:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Drive 61 mph until someone tries passing, then immediately accelerate to 74.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Follow a logging truck for 37 miles before attempting to pass precisely when an oncoming vehicle finally appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
