U.P. Weather: Summer Holds On, But Fall Is Starting to Lurk

Share

The U.P. is staring at a pretty respectable five-day forecast, provided we can get through Tuesday without the atmosphere becoming overly dramatic.

Monday starts us off pleasantly, Tuesday brings the week’s best opportunity for thunderstorms, and then Wednesday and Thursday look like the sort of August weather we’re going to be begging for in about four months.

Here’s how things are shaping up.

Pasty HQ — Escanaba

Monday should be comfortable at Pasty HQ, with temperatures a little cooler and humidity considerably less obnoxious than we’ve dealt with lately.

Monday 🌤️ — Partly sunny, pleasant and less humid. High around 78°F. This is August behaving itself.

Monday Night 🌙 — Generally quiet with temperatures settling to around 60°F.

Tuesday ⛈️ — Some sunshine to start, then clouds increase. A passing morning shower is possible before scattered thunderstorms become the bigger concern during the afternoon. High around 78°F.

Tuesday Night 🌙 — Things settle down quickly behind the system, and temperatures tumble all the way into the mid-to-upper 40s. That’s not fall. That’s August briefly showing us fall’s business card.

Wednesday 🌤️ — Clouds give way to some sunshine, humidity drops and the high reaches the mid-70s. Pretty difficult to complain about.

Wednesday Night 🌙 — Quiet and cool with temperatures dipping into the upper 40s.

Thursday ☀️ — Mostly sunny and downright pleasant. High around 75°F.

Thursday Night 🌙 — Partly cloudy and not quite as chilly, with a low in the mid-50s.

Friday ⛈️ — A mixture of clouds and sunshine with another opportunity for a thunderstorm during the afternoon. High in the mid-70s.

Friday Night 🌦️ — A few lingering showers remain possible with temperatures falling into the mid-50s.

Bays de Noc Marine Forecast

Little and Big Bay de Noc are telling basically the same story this week, so we’re not going to make you read the same marine forecast twice just to prove we know there are two bays.

When conditions differ enough between Little Bay and Big Bay to matter, we’ll tell you.

Monday — Light winds generally around 5–10 knots, shifting around through the day, with waves staying low. Overall, this looks like a pretty friendly day for fishing boats. If you don’t catch anything, you’re going to have to find another excuse.

Monday Night — Winds remain generally manageable with relatively calm water continuing across the bays.

Tuesday ⛈️ — The waves themselves aren’t the problem. Winds should remain around 10 knots or less much of the time with low waves, but showers and thunderstorms enter the picture. A perfectly nice-looking bay can become a considerably worse place to be when lightning shows up. If you hear thunder, the fish can wait.

Tuesday Night — Winds turn north to northwest behind the system and conditions settle back down. Waves should remain relatively low.

Wednesday — Light winds and generally calm water return. This looks like one of the better opportunities of the week to get the boat out without spending the afternoon questioning your life choices.

Wednesday Night — Quiet conditions continue with light winds and low waves.

Thursday — Another generally favorable day on the bays. Winds remain relatively light and nothing currently suggests particularly rough fishing conditions.

Thursday Night — Southerly winds begin developing ahead of the next weather system, but conditions should remain manageable.

Friday ⛈️ — Another round of showers and possibly thunderstorms enters the picture. Winds may also begin increasing as the next system approaches. The details are still far enough out to move around, so anyone planning a Friday trip should give the marine forecast another look before launching.

The fishing verdict: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday currently look like the better bets. Tuesday earns the ⛈️ because of the thunderstorm threat. We’re holding off on 🌊 and 💨 because the forecast doesn’t currently justify declaring the bays miserable just for dramatic effect.

Western U.P.

The western end gets a decent Monday before rain and thunderstorms move through, followed by a couple of nights cool enough to remind everyone where we live.

Monday ☀️ — Mostly sunny and warm with temperatures around 80°F.

Monday Night ⛈️ — Showers and thunderstorms become increasingly likely overnight. Temperatures fall into the mid-50s.

Tuesday 🌦️ — Showers are possible early before conditions improve through the day. Highs settle into the mid-70s.

Tuesday Night 🌙 — Mostly clear and cool, dropping into the mid-40s. Open-window weather becomes close-the-damn-window weather surprisingly quickly.

Wednesday ☀️ — Sunny and comfortable with highs in the mid-70s.

Wednesday Night 🌙 — Mostly clear and chilly. Lows in the mid-40s.

Thursday ☀️ — Sunshine continues and temperatures rebound to around 80°F. This is probably the day you’re going to wish you’d taken off work.

Thursday Night 🌦️ — Partly cloudy with another chance of showers developing late. Low in the mid-50s.

Friday 🌦️ — Partly sunny with scattered showers possible. High around 80°F.

Friday Night 🌦️ — A few showers remain possible with temperatures dropping back into the mid-50s.

Central U.P.

Central U.P. gets a quieter Monday followed by some unsettled weather Tuesday. Behind that comes a stretch of cooler, considerably nicer weather.

Monday 🌤️ — A mix of clouds and sunshine with temperatures in the mid-70s.

Monday Night 🌙 — Partly cloudy with temperatures falling into the low-to-mid 50s.

Tuesday 🌦️ — A chance of showers as a front works through the region. Winds turn northwest and may get a little gusty. Highs around the low-to-mid 70s.

Tuesday Night 🌙 — Skies clear and temperatures drop into the upper 40s to low 50s.

Wednesday ☀️ — Sunny, cooler and comfortable. High around the low 70s.

Wednesday Night 🌙 — Mostly clear with temperatures in the low-to-mid 50s.

Thursday ☀️ — Sunshine continues with highs in the low-to-mid 70s. Another excellent day for accomplishing absolutely nothing outdoors.

Thursday Night 🌙 — Partly cloudy and somewhat warmer overnight.

Friday 🌦️ — Mostly sunny to partly cloudy early, with shower chances increasing later in the day. Highs in the upper 70s.

Friday Night 🌦️ — Showers remain possible into the evening.

Eastern U.P.

The eastern end starts quietly enough, but Tuesday looks like the day most likely to require some radar watching. Things improve considerably behind it.

Monday 🌤️ — Mostly sunny with highs in the upper 70s.

Monday Night 🌦️ — Clouds increase with showers becoming possible later in the night. Temperatures fall into the upper 50s.

Tuesday ⛈️ — Showers and thunderstorms become possible as the system moves across the region. Highs remain in the mid-to-upper 70s. This is the day when looking out the window and saying, “Eh, it’ll probably miss us,” may not constitute a complete weather strategy.

Tuesday Night 🌦️ — Any remaining showers taper off and cooler air arrives. Lows fall into the upper 40s.

Wednesday ☀️ — Sunshine returns with temperatures in the mid-70s.

Wednesday Night 🌙 — Mostly clear and chilly, dropping into the mid-40s.

Thursday ☀️ — Sunny and pleasant with highs in the mid-70s.

Thursday Night 🌙 — Partly cloudy with temperatures in the low-to-mid 50s.

Friday 🌦️ — A decent start to the day before another chance of showers works into the region later. Highs in the upper 70s.

Friday Night 🌦️ — Showers remain possible with lows in the upper 50s.

Overall, Wednesday and Thursday are making a pretty strong case for themselves as the winners of the week. Tuesday is the troublemaker, especially for anyone headed onto the water, and Friday looks like it may bring another round of unsettled weather.

And those temperatures in the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday night?

We’re not saying summer is ending.

We’re just saying fall has apparently started driving slowly past the house.
