ESCANABA — What began as an unfortunate roadside deer carcass has quietly evolved into one of Delta County’s most beloved roadside attractions.
For weeks, children arriving at Pioneer Trail Park have eagerly searched for the now-famous deer resting just off U.S. 2/41 near the park entrance.
“It’s become part of the experience,” said one parent. “The kids yell, ‘There’s the deer!’ before they even notice the playground.”
Some families reportedly began referring to the animal as “Pioneer Pete,” while others insisted his name was “Bucky.” One particularly imaginative five-year-old remained convinced the deer was simply “taking a really long nap.”
Park visitors say the tradition grew so quickly that children would wave as they drove past, with several parents claiming their kids were more excited to see the roadside deer than the playground itself.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck earlier this week.
Witnesses reported a turkey vulture landed beside the beloved mascot before beginning what officials diplomatically described as “an unscheduled maintenance project.”
Children looked on in horror as parents desperately attempted to explain the circle of life without using the phrase, “Well… he’s being eaten.”
“It got weird fast,” one grandmother reportedly admitted.
Park staff say they immediately realized Delta County’s newest unofficial mascot had reached the end of its public service career.
“We knew we couldn’t just leave the kids without something to look forward to,” said one park employee. “Morale would collapse.”
Officials are now exploring several replacement options, including a fiberglass deer, a bronze deer statue, a carved wooden buck, or, if budgets become tight, simply painting antlers on an old fire hydrant.
County leaders emphasized the replacement should be “longer lasting, considerably less weird, and noticeably better smelling.”
Meanwhile, local turkey vultures have expressed disappointment over the decision, calling Pioneer Trail Park “one of the finest dining establishments in Delta County.”
At press time, children were reportedly still asking where the deer had gone, while one parent quietly muttered, “Let’s just hope they don’t get attached to the replacement.”
