DAFTER — Chippewa County authorities confirmed Monday that a young Soo-area man has become the internet’s newest relationship expert after allegedly dropping his now ex-girlfriend off at the Dafter Landfill, later explaining to friends that he was simply “taking out the trash.”
Witnesses say the couple arrived at the landfill shortly after noon, where what began as a routine drive quickly devolved into a heated exchange audible from several hundred feet away.
“It sounded serious,” said one landfill employee. “Then we heard him say, ‘Well… this seems like the appropriate place,’ and next thing we knew she was standing by the scale house while he drove away.”
The woman was reportedly unharmed and was later picked up by a friend, who described the incident as “the most creative breakup I’ve ever heard of.”
The former boyfriend has since defended his actions, insisting the landfill stop “just made sense.”
“I recycle,” he reportedly told friends. “I’m trying to be environmentally responsible.”
The explanation has done little to win over public opinion.
Relationship experts unanimously agreed that while communication is important, depositing your significant other at a licensed solid waste facility falls well outside accepted conflict resolution techniques.
The Dafter Landfill also issued an unusually specific statement.
“We accept household waste, construction debris, brush, and certain recyclable materials. Former romantic partners have never been, and will never be, an approved waste stream.”
Friends of the couple say the relationship had been deteriorating for weeks.
“He kept saying he needed to get rid of negativity,” one friend explained. “None of us realized he had a destination picked out.”
The story spread quickly across social media, where residents debated whether the stunt was hilarious, immature, or simply an expensive waste of gasoline.
Others questioned whether the driver should have been charged an additional tipping fee.
Officials confirmed no laws were broken, though one employee admitted the incident briefly caused confusion when another customer asked whether “relationship disposal” required separating plastics from paper.
At press time, sources reported the young man had updated his relationship status to “It’s Complicated,” while also discovering that being technically single is considerably more expensive than buying flowers.
